Turner Laser Systems to Showcase Breakthroughs in Laser Processing at ICALEO 2026

Updated: 6 days ago

Fremont, CA – Sept 2026 — Turner Laser Systems (TLS) will present two technical talks at the 45th Annual International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO 2026), taking place October 5–8 in Denver, Colorado. The upcoming presentations demonstrate how optimizing motion-system architectures eliminates traditional speed and precision trade-offs in through-glass via (TGV) fabrication and large-area laser micromachining. Overcoming Field Limits for Sub-Micron Accuracy in Large-Area Laser Micromachining
Wednesday, October 7th
Time: 10:00 AM – 10:30 AM
Presenter: Dr. George Wilkes
Addressing the spatial limitations of galvo scan fields, TLS Director of Applications Dr. George Wilkes will present “Overcoming Field Limits for Sub-Micron Accuracy in Large-Area Laser Micromachining”. Developed alongside SCANLAB, ACS Motion Control, and Physik Instrumente (PI), the study utilizes SCANLAB’s XL SCAN architecture to synchronously control scan heads and linear motor stages. Demonstrating a 3x reduction in feature width variability (0.52 µm vs 1.53 µm) across substrates exceeding 200 mm, the technique completely eliminates stitch lines while cutting processing times by 22%.

Time: 10:50 AM – 11:10 AM
Presenter: Robert Braunschweig
In a second presentation by Robert Braunschweig, “Motion-Optimized Trajectory Control for High-Throughput Through-Glass Via Fabrication,” the industry assumption is challenged that laser pulse repetition rate is the primary bottleneck in TGV production. By benchmarking motion control enhancements—including ACS ServoBoost, Learning Boost, and 2D stage error mapping—on a fixed-optic femtosecond platform, the team achieved a 65x reduction in radial RMS error (from 13.1 µm down to 0.2 µm) and more than doubled throughput from 4 to 9 holes per second on the exact same laser source.
When process engineers face throughput limitations, the default instinct is to reach for a faster laser. Our findings prove that the motion system is often the true constraint. Optimizing stage dynamics and control algorithms delivers massive improvements in both speed and accuracy.
Our TLS applications experts will be attending ICALEO 2026 at the Hilton Denver City Center throughout the conference to consult with packaging and processing engineers.
